5 Commonly Overlooked Travel Essentials

I’ve worked as a travel rep. in the Costa del Sol for many years and my experience has taught me that people are really very predictable. Every year (and I’ve been doing this work for over ten years) I meet people who make the same mistakes as those who have been before them. I’ve even met people who overlook the same essentials every year.

One of the most commonly overlooked holiday requirements is car hire. Many travellers expect to be able to walk up to the car hire desk and get the car that they want when they arrive. But during the peak weeks demand can be incredibly high so it is not uncommon for people to be dissatisfied when the car hire firm can’t provide the vehicle they want or they simply have nothing left to hire.

The answer is very simple and will put a few pounds in your pocket. Its a really good idea to book your car hire before you leave the UK. The further in advance that you can book your car hire the more you are likely to save. You will also stand a far better chance of getting the car that you want. So if you have set your heart on a nice open top car to use while on your holidays don’t leave it to chance, book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Another key travel requirement that is often overlooked is travel insurance. Often this hasn’t been overlooked but instead of getting a policy that provides adequate cover the holiday-maker may have scrimped on a travel insurance policy that doesn’t include essentials like repatriation in the event of injury.

Check the details to be sure that you and your family are properly covered by your travel insurance policy. Adequate medical cover is particularly important if you expect to engage in any potentially dangerous activities like parascending, go-karting or dangerous sports. In my time as a rep I have seen far too many people injured on holiday without the insurance cover they need in order to get home. Without it repatriation can be incredibly expensive.

Another commonly overlooked item is a universal plug that fits Spanish power outlets. Spanish power outlets provide 220V AC which is suitable for most UK appliances including hair dryers and telephone chargers. In Spain you need to use an adapter for the power outlets.

In the United States the supply is 120V AC so  most UK appliances will not work. Make certain you have an adapter if you are travelling to Spain.

Everybody knows how important it is to protect the skin from the sun’s ferrocious rays, but I stil meet people who get burned because they forget to apply some suntan lotion before leaving their aircraft. Every year people arrive here in Spain without having applied adequate suncscreen and within a couple of hours they can be badly sunburned.

The last thing that I shall recommend, that is often overlooked, is a good little first aid kit. Pack a few first aid essentials including some antiseptic, plasters, bandages, dressings and pain killers. You may also like to pack some insect repellent and maybe some antihistamine cream for those annoyingly itchy bites and maybe anti-malaria tablets.

I really hope that these few suggestions will mean I meet fewer people having problems due to things they have forgotten.
