Traveling and Andorra
Andorra is a country which covers an area of approximately 468 sq km and its population stands at around 65,000. During ski season the population increases primarily due to the fact that many tourists flock this region. Andorra is a duty-free country, which is within the Pyrenees Mountains and is bordered by France and Spain. Andorra la Vella is the capital city of Andorra.
If you are considering traveling to Andorra, there are some important factors you must keep in mind. Due to the mountainous ranges of the Pyrenees Mountains, one road leads into Andorra from France and one road entering Andorra from Spain. Please remember that that Andorra is not a Schengen member.
To travel to the country of Andorra, you must look at flights originating in neighboring Spain and France. Look at flights going into South Africa where you can board a motor coach that will transport you into Andorra.
No trains are available in Andorra. There is however, a bus route that links with France. If you want to travel to Andorra by train French trains is the best way you will get to Andorra. If you are traveling from the UK to Andorra overnight trains are available.
Remember that the compartments on the train will be co-ed. You can travel from London to Paris where you can take a bus ride through the mountain pass into Andorra. The bus ride is affordable overall but even less expensive if, you book in advance. Keep in mind that the bus route is subject to cancellation if the mountain passes are blocked so having a backup plan for your transportation needs, is a great idea.
You will be pleased to know that fuel prices are 20% cheaper in Andorra as compared Barcelona and 30% cheaper as compared to France. Ensure you have proper emergency supplies. Emergency supplies are fire extinguishers, warm clothes, spare bulb set, extra food and snow tires/chains when traveling through the mountain range.
The roads are of good quality in Andorra if you want to travel by car. Entering into Andorra from the Spanish side is easy and a straight drive. Driving in from the French side involves many hairpins and can be quite stressful at times. Be prepared for delays during the busy times. Ensure your car is in good condition. Be aware of the “black ice” and huge snowdrifts that can be found along the mountain passes. The temperature in Andorra is much colder than at sea level. While driving from the French side you will pass through the Tunnel d’Envalira, which will require a credit or debit card for payment for travel.
Whatever your transportation needs are, you will find that you will be accommodated in some way or the other. With a little patience and the desire to spend some time in beautiful Andorra, you will not be disappointed with your preparation in mind; you will be greatly pleased with what Andorra has to offer.
