Cleanliness: Key To Construction Safety

Of all the work-site accidents recorded, the construction-sector-related accidents are the most numerous since the said types of works are filled with hazards.

Therefore, construction workers should know the hazards involved and take preventive measures to address the risk to an acceptable state.

Hereunder are a few construction safety checklist preparatory to undertaking construction activities.

A.        General

1. Are there enough installations of construction site signage?
2. How frequently are safety meetings held?
3. Are there adequate supplies for first-aid kits?
4. Are there trainings conducted related to work safety?
5. Is prohibited-substance abuse (drug, alcohol) adequately forbidden with written guidelines?
6. Is there a posting for emergency telephone numbers?

B.        Housekeeping

1.  Are workplaces neat and orderly?
2. Is there a consistent waste-disposal process?
3. Are dangerous waste materials completely supplied with instructions on handling them?
4. Are passages devoid of clutter?
5. Are the illuminations provided adequate?
6. Are there waste containers ?
7. Is there a sufficient potable water supply?

C.       Communication

1. Was there a thorough and recorded evaluation of work-site dangers?
2. Are safety-program policies written and duly acknowledged?
3. Are employees adequately trained?
4. Are dangerous materials properly stored and marked?
5. Are all dangerous materials on site recorded?

D.        Construction Area

1. Is a construction site sign properly put up?
2. Are there barricades installed for open ditches and are they properly marked?
3. Are protections provided for drop-offs?
4. Are hazard signs used?
5. Are equipments adequately secured?

E.         Tools and Equipment

1. Are hazards sufficiently addressed by protective equipment?
2. Are workers issued with personal protective equipment (PPEs)?
3. Are PPEs used?
4. Are checkings conducted on the PPEs prior to and after use?
5. Are adequate fall protections installed?
6. Are there sufficient supply of respirators and masks?
7. Are tools and equipment properly kept?
8. Are all users authorized?
9. Are tools protected from unauthorized use
10. Do employees keep and employ the tool guards?
11. Are ladders not deteriorated?
12. Are ladders adequately sturdy for a given task?

There is no means that all construction work-site dangers can be entirely removed. This does not entail, nevertheless, that construction safety is sacrificed. Observing “common-sense” safety measures together with the aforementioned guidelines can result to construction activities free from accidents.
