where did the traditional head table come from-at banquets, etc..?

What options are available- for nontraditional set ups for a banquet-using round tables but reserving seating for VIPs.
need non-traditional seating for a banquet- seating at round tables- will have VIP guest but don’t want a traditional headtable. what do you think.. ok you party planners and banquet guru’s help me out.

I believe it come from days of old with Kings and Queens regarded as important and that everyone should look at them being the focus of night.

Generally for VIPs reseve the front round table or those closest to the action.
